چکیده

Electroactive polymers have been studied for artificial muscle applications in last decades. One of the EAP materials, 3M VHB acrylic tapes, have shown been outstanding electromechanical coupling performance. The scope of this study is to understand the electromechanical properties of VHB acrylic material. In addition, the research explores new practical designs of soft actuators. The basic designs employ directional planar stiffeners that act as geometric constraints. The utilization of these stiffeners provides the ability to tailor the planar deformation into many three dimensional deformed shapes. In the first part of this work, the material nonlinear mechanical response is characterized using a pre-stretched planar configuration with different bi-axial stretch ratios. Also, unequal biaxial stretch ratios were also investigated. During the course of deformation, high resolution images of the deformed state were in situ captured. The images were analyzed by digital image correlation technique to evaluate the in-plane finite strain components. The measurements are used to calibrate a Neo-Hookean based material model that couples the applied electrical field to the actuator mechanical deformation. The material model is built into a user-material subroutine with the ABAQUS commercial finite element package. The numerical model is used to optimize different geometrical feature, electrode layup and stacking sequence for the actuator in order to attain a prescribed deformation pattern. The developed framework will aid in designing and optimizing the EAPs actuator configurations for general 3D prescribed deformation configuration. In the second part of our work, we presented a new actuator design featuring a freestanding configuration without the constraints of pre-stretch. By using different configuration of stiffener reinforcement, the proposed design presented various complex three dimensional

High-Resolution, Large-Area Fabrication of Compliant Electrodes via Laser Ablation for Robust, Stretchable Dielectric Elastomer Actuators and Sensors.

A key element in stretchable actuators, sensors, and systems based on elastomer materials are compliant electrodes. While there exist many methodologies for fabricating electrodes on dielectric elastomers, very few succeed in achieving high-resolution patterning over large areas. We present a novel approach for the production of mechanically robust, high-resolution compliant electrodes for stre...

Modeling of a Dielectric Elastomer Bender Actuator

The current smallest self-contained modular robot uses a shape memory alloy, which is inherently inefficient, slow and difficult to control. We present the design, fabrication and demonstration of a module based on dielectric elastomer actuation. The module uses a pair of bowtie dielectric elastomer actuators in an agonist-antagonist configuration and is seven times smaller than previously demo...

Fabrication Process of Silicone-based Dielectric Elastomer Actuators

This contribution demonstrates the fabrication process of dielectric elastomer transducers (DETs). DETs are stretchable capacitors consisting of an elastomeric dielectric membrane sandwiched between two compliant electrodes. The large actuation strains of these transducers when used as actuators (over 300% area strain) and their soft and compliant nature has been exploited for a wide range of a...

Large-scale failure modes of dielectric elastomer actuators

Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) show promise for robotic and mechatronic applications. However, to date, these actuators have experienced high rates of failure that have prevented their practical application. Here, large scale modes of failure of DEAs and their performance limits are studied. The objective is to provide design guidelines and bound the performance of DEAs that avoid failur...

Self-sensing dielectric elastomer actuators in closed-loop operation

Because of their large output strain, dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) have been proposed for tunable optics applications such as tunable gratings. However, the inherent viscoelastic drift of these actuators is an important drawback and closed-loop operation of DEAs is a prerequisite for any accurate real-world application. In this paper, we show how capacitive self-sensing can be used to ...
